BET apologizes for Blue Ivy natural hair "joke"

By Tenisha Mercer

Po' Blue Ivy Carter.

Really, Jay and Bey's offspring can't catch a break. A day after withering online criticism about 106th & Park guest host Karreuche Tran dogging Blue Ivy natural hair on TV, BET publicly apologized. Stephen G. Hill, BET's Vice President of Music Programming and Talent, apologized on Twitter in a series of four tweets to Jay and Bey, as well as Tran.

Tran made this comment about Blue's fro:

"I really did wake up like this, because my parents never comb my hair!”said Tran, one day after Blue stole the show -- and hearts -- while on stage with her uber famous parents and while dancing, singing and swaying to "Drunk in Love," and "Flawless" while Bey performed at the VMAs.

Her comments came a day after Beyonce's performance at MTV VMA Awards, and after Jay and Blue joined her on stage. Hill's tweets are below. But I'm not buying it. I have said countless times that a baby's hair should not be up for jokes or online criticism; it's taboo, or at least it should be.

On behalf of Bey and Jay, I do NOT accept BET's apology; writers should know better. Since when did a two-year-old's hair become the topic of pop culture discussion. Dang. Blue can't win for losing.

I'm throwing BET under the bus. And no, Tran, doesn't get a break just because she read the damn teleprompter. She is to blame as well. Always trying to be funny, when we are the ones who are getting laughed at. And it's not funny.

5 cardinal natural hair sins and how 2-year old Blue Ivy is "breaking" every single last one of them

By Tenisha Mercer

As soon as I saw Blue Ivy's fro at the VMAs, I knew SOMEBODY was gonna pop off at the mouth about her hair. And damnit if I wasn't right. I just knew folks on Black Twitter were prob going in on this baby...

"Bey did that, but did you see THAT baby's hair, tho?"

Somehow, it all goes back to hair. Can't we just be happy for the Carter family for a second before we start talking about Blue Ivy's natural hair? Must it be the topic of conversation all the damn time?

Karrueche Tran, who's gotten famous for nothing more than being Chris Brown's girlfriend .. ex-girlfriend ... ride or die while in rehab ... sidepiece post-Ri Ri, I'm not quite sure, said Blue needed her hair "combed" during an interview on 106 & Park.

A grown woman throwin' shade at a 2-year-old? Much? Honey, the Bey hive will come stinging for that ARSE!

To be fair, I have heard the very same argument spoken by tons of folks NOT so famous, natural and permed. Women on Facebook, in real life. A lot say pretty much the same thing, all with a look of shock and incredulity, as if Bey has committed the cardinal hair sins and Blue is the sacrificial lamb:

1. Bey got too much damn money to let Blue walk around with her hair looking like THAT!
2. Bey always sports a weave. Why does Blue's hair have to look like THAT?
3. Bey's momma was a hairdresser. She should know better!
4.  Why don't they braid that baby hair? Got her walking around here looking like THAT!
5.  SOMEBODY need to comb that baby hair!

Now, here are my responses to all five.

Does Beyonce need to comb Blue Ivy's hair?

By Tenisha Mercer

She's a celebrity baby, for sure. And she's as adorable as she wants to be in photos on Beyonce's Instagram account, but there seems to be a common thread about Blue Ivy Carter -- her hair.

Increasingly, commenters bash Beyonce's hair combing skills and criticize Blue's free form afro. We knew Blue would be subject to criticism, but really tho? These are some of the comments from a recent Huffington Post article:

What is the name for this mess? Hairism? Texturism? Kinkism? Because, essentially, these commenters invariably point out that Beyonce needs to comb Bey's hair and point out Blue's hair texture. They all seem to say the same thing -- that Blue's hair texture isn't "good" enough.
