Blogger Gabi Gregg's 'Fatkini' Sells Out; Should Fat Girls Wear Bikinis?

By Tenisha Mercer

Fashion Blogger Gabi Gregg's Galaxy 'Fatkini'
How's this to show the fashion world that plus-sized girls need viable, fashion forward swimwear?

The launch of the so-called "Fatkini" -- two-piece, colorful swimsuits by bikini wearing, plus-size fashionista Gabi Gregg - was so popular that the Galaxy Print bikini recently sold out in a matter of days.

So much so that the suit's maker,  Swimsuits for All, has been deluged with orders. The company's website had a few technical hiccups that incorrectly led people to believe their orders had been placed. Their cards were charged and social media chaos, of course, ensued.

That matter is still being sorted out. Gregg issued a statement on her blog apologizing about the technical issues and said the suits wouldn't be restocked because of production issues.

Should Plus-Sized Women Wear Bikinis?
I'm sure they'll work it out, but the Fatkini sales rush says much more about plus-sized womens' fashions than we could ever know.  There is clearly demand here. And it comes on the heels of controversy at Abercrombie & Fitch on media reports of its refusal to sell clothing larger than a sized 10.

In case you've taken a jaunt down the plus-sized swimwear line, what's there is appalling: very matronly, ugly swimsuits that I wouldn't wear if you made me.

So why do swimsuit makers, and anyone else for that matter, expect plus-sized women to wear that garbage? If anything, it only opens them up to ridicule -- ugly prints, nothing fashion forward at all. The message is loud and clear: Cover that ish up.

The Message to Fat Women
And for so long, they've believed that message. Avoid water. Be glad about the poor swimsuit options available, because it was rare to find anything that looked halfway decent. And if they did find a swimsuit, it had to be a one-piece.

Gregg, after all, made the fashion community gasp when she wore a bikini on her blog. Since, she's been featured one everything from MTV, The Today Show and InStyle and advocates acceptance of plus-sized women.

It takes balls for any woman to bear it all in a bikini. Now, Gregg is using her fame to push the Fatkini and it's simply brilliant. I don't care for the Fatkini name, but what's certain is that she is making waves in a staid fashion community that for years has ignored larger women.

The Fatkini is everything that typical plus-sized swimsuits aren't, featuring bold colors, amazing design, and a fashion-forward swimsuit  that anyone would wear. Hell, I want the Galaxy Print and I'm not plus-sized. Clearly, this has hit a fashion nerve. Plus-sized women need good swimwear and bikinis, just like the rest of us.

Because no one wants to go to the beach covered up.

Abercrombie and Fitch and Their War Against Women

By Tenisha Mercer

Abercrombie & Fitch is known for stepping knee deep into controversy.

So it's no surprise that the retailer known for its edgy advertising is raising feathers -- this time for refusing to manufacture plus-sized clothing to teens. . The retailer's refusal to sell larger clothing has hit a nerve, with some celebrities and everyday people, alike, calling for boycotts, to an online campaign to donate Abercrombie clothes to the homeless.

Abercrombie doesn't make clothing beyond a size 10 -- effectively lopping off average sized folks.

It's even sparked a rebuttal, called "Fat & Attractive," a video by plus-sized blogger Jes Baker.

A&F, meanwhile, has backpedaled, apparently, and apologized for these comments, made in a 2006 interview by CEO Mike Jeffries:

“We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don’t belong [in our clothes], and they can’t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely. Those companies that are in trouble are trying to target everybody: young, old, fat, skinny. But then you become totally vanilla.”

The comments originally appeared in Salon but were recently republished by Business Insider. It's not the first time that retailers have gotten into hot water over plus-sized clothing. UK-based retailer Zara has also faced similar allegations that it does not sell larger clothing.

Wedding Gowns At Target for $99

By Tenisha Mercer

Target is bringing its brand of cheap chic straight to the wedding aisle.

Just in time for June brides without a dress, Target is rolling out $99 wedding gowns that, more importantly, don't look like they cost $99. Can the retailer known for it's trendy clothing and collabos with designers such as Vera Wang and Mossimo pull this one off?

Maybe. There's a huge market for good looking but affordable gowns. But not just David Bridal's bottom of the rack gowns that look like they cost $99. Affordable AND good looking gowns. For starters, it offers gowns in four options, including sweet heart, plunging necklines, cap sleeves and off the shoulder dresses  ranging from $99 to $129.

If you are looking for a cheap gown, you can't beat it.

Janelle Monae, Erykah Badu and Prince at the Billboard Music Awards

By Tenisha Mercer

There's always naturals representin', and this time it was none other than Janelle Monae, Erykah and Prince at the Billboard Music Award while Janelle Monae's pompadour was on point, of course .I love how Janelle's style has evolved over the years, with the singer now a Cover Girl model in addition to her singing. .

Janelle was onstage with Erykah Badu who wore a blunt cut wig. Different look for her. And the purple one wore an afro.

Prince -- Enough said!

Scandal Fever

By Tenisha Mercer

ABC's Scandal is must-see TV, and it didn't disappoint. #TeamGladiators

Show creator Shonda Rhimes is a BEAST -- excellent writing, characters and plots. She put her entire foot into the finale last night. I was on the edge of my seat with my eyes covered, afraid to look. Now, while everyone was trying to figure out the mole angle, we were all left with our mouths open at the surprise ending.

Where do I start?

David  -- We knew David Rosen did some dirt, but for him to get a U.S. Attorney General's gig out of the deal? What the WHAT? And his deal was nothing short of blackmail. Brillliance at its best.

Billy -- And Billy Chambers? Were it not for Rosen giving him a fake cytron card, he would have had everything.

Amanda -- She really enjoyed that drill, didn't she?

Cyrus - I don't know which Cyrus to believe. Is he really trying to save the presidency or does he have his own selfish motives? The lines are starting to blur.

Liv -- OMG! Loved her plan with Fitz. Sounded good, too bad it didnt work. ,She's a great strategist. The ending, tho? And DAD? Now, no one -- and I mean, no one-- saw that one coming! No one. Adds a whole new wrinkle to the story. What dad puts the order in to kill their daughter?

Huck -- The hitman lost his balls. He couldn't kill Billy Chambers. One too many kills, I guess.

Fitz - Now, he sucks major behind for wanting to be with Liv and then caving in at the last minute. We all knew he was going back to Millie all along, even though Liv's plan could have worked. Fitz is so wishy washy it kills me. Either love Olivia or be down with Millie.

Finding the Perfect Boyfriend Jeans

By Tenisha Mercer

Love this look!

I am crushing on ripped boyfriend jeans. Like, seriously crushing.

I need a pair in my life. But I refuse to pay $70 for them, as I've seen on Asos is sold out, so that leaves me searching.

I like them, but not that dang much to spend $70. They are so summer chic - dress them up with a cute blazer or make them casual with a cute sheer top.

Think it's time for me to make a Goodwill excursion to find a pair and create the ripped look for $7.  Now, I'd be willing to pay for a pair that fight like a glove. The ones I've got in my closet don't fit well at all on me and give me the flat booty look. Not feeling that at all.

Do you have boyfriend jeans?

Natural Hair Pic of the Day

By Tenisha Mercer

This photo is hilarious! Ladies, what is your nighttime routine and how do you keep it sexy? My husband jokes on me when I do the "Celie" braids, but it's like I tell him: They come with good results. Lord knows I get lazy sometimes and won't retwist my hair.
Now, he doesn't mind the Doo Rag (bonus points)!
