UFC's Chael Sonnen Asks to Touch ESPN Anchor Sage Steele's Natural Hair

By Tenisha Mercer

How's this for a natural hair request on live TV?

In the middle of interviewing UFC fighter Chael Sonnen, ESPN anchor Sage Steele gets an unusual request by Sonnen to touch her natural hair. This is probably the most unusual of her career. I think she handled a personal request perfectly, with grace and tact. Sonnen, of course, leaned over and felt her hair.

Though I wondered what would have happened had she said "no." The blogs would have been on fire!

And I'm a bit miffed at why Sonnen seemed to be surprised that her hair was "very soft." Folks really don't know anything about our hair, yet are so fascinated by it. At least he did the right thing and asked before he touched; that would have been kinda awkward, otherwise.

Do you let people touch your natural hair?

Product Review: III Sisters of Nature Curly Whip Pudding

III Sisters of Nature Spiral Pudding

I have been using III Sisters of Nature Curly Whip Pudding on damp, flatrolled hair and I love it! Nice set. Less shrinkage. It's now a staple product. And at just $12.99, it is much cheaper than $22+ Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding, and no strong, overbearing smell.

It tries to set itself apart, with natural ingredients and as a more natural, "cleaner" product, instead of the mineral oil and parabens used in Miss Jessie's.

What to Wear for Spring 2013: How to Wear Mixed Prints

By Tenisha Mercer

Mixed prints are all the rage on the runway for spring -- but wearing them in "real life" can be a totally different story. Now, while First Lady Michelle Obama and Beyonce have rocked mixed prints, YOU actually doing it -- without the help of a stylist at your beck and call or a million dollar wardrobe --  can be a HOT MESS if you aren't careful.

Things can go wrong real quick, especially if the color, patterns and prints aren't just right, as this article in Clutch pointed out. So instead of being trendy and just plain wrong, here are a few tips to keep in mind if you want to wear mixed prints in your wardrobe this spring:

1. Pair large prints with small prints. It's all about proportion and symmetry. It's a great form of contrast.

2. Use different prints in same color pattern. This is where mixed prints goes all wrong, when you pair prints in colors that are widely different. Just don't. This is one area where you want to play it safe. So, only use colors that are the same or at least, contrasting. For example, pair mixed prints in the same colors -- red, white, blue. Otherwise, you'll end up looking like the "crazy" lady in prints.

3. Stripes are neutral. A quick and easy way to put this trend in your wardrobe immediately is to make stripes a neutral pattern that you could pair with just about anything, as long as it's in the same color scheme. So, using tip #2 above, you could pair a striped shirt with a floral print (same color hue, of course) bottom. Stripes tone things down just a bit, and can be paired with plaids, bold prints, geometric and animal prints.

Beyonce's New Swimsuit Line at H and M

By Tenisha Mercer

Beyonce H&M

Trending clothing retailer H&M has revealed its new summer line featuring Beyonce, and it's a killer. The line, which is called Beyonce as Mrs. Carter in H&M, (Really not sure why the long name, but maybe it's a legal thing) features a variety of bikinis and accessories with bold colors, fringe and embellishments.

Hopefully, the line will be at an affordable price point. It's one of the things I love about H&M -- good fashions at affordable prices. And Beyonce joins a load of other celebrities and high fashion names with lines at H&M, including the sold out Versace H&M line, and David Beckham.

It's Tax Time - What are You Planning to Buy?

By Tenisha Mercer

It's tax time -- what do you plan to spend your refund on?

April 15th marks the IRS income tax filing deadline, if you've procrastinated, it means you have until 11:59 p.m. tonight to file.

If you're lucky, it could mean a nice tax refund in your bank account. And since you've got it to splurge, what hair product would you treat yourself to, courtesy of good ol' Uncle Sam (really, it's your money, but anywho)?

Green Smoothies Fo' Life, Yo!

By Tenisha Mercer

Earlier this year, I began a lifestyle change to eat healthier, inspired in part by a Green Smoothie challenge on Facebook.

I saw the Green Smoothie challenge too late on Facebook to join, but I decided to do my thing, anyway. I got out my Ninja  -- an infomercial product that was gathering dust in my kitchen cabinet --  bought some spinach and frozen fruit, and began blending away using this smoothie recipe.

Straight Natural Hair For Spring

Went to the Dominican salon for a blowout and this was the result. Lost a little bit of length on the sides after putting gel on it while vacationing in Fla (I know) and tangling.

A Pill to Keep the Gray Hairs Away?

By Tenisha Mercer

gray natural hair
Gray and FIERCE!
As someone who started getting gray (white) hairs in my early 20s (and now has more and more random strands popping up every day) I get, no, I FEEL, the need to get rid of the gray madness. Gray/white hair? I just CANNOT.

It's a constant reminder of getting older, every time you look in the mirror. In my case, it's genetic. My mom has a halo of gray hair around her edges. And my grandmother had a head full of the white stuff. And guess what? So do I and, at nearly 40, there's nothing I can do about it, less a box of Mehendi (black) henna or a black rinse kit to cover it up.

But now comes news that, like everything else in our society, there's a pill for that, too. Go Away Gray is a pill that promises to get rid of gray hair, made by Rise-N-Shine LLC.

Beyonce Rocks Tribal Prints in Cuba

By Tenisha Mercer

Jay Z and Beyonce's visit to Cuba for the couple's 5th anniversary made international headlines, but let's talk about what got my attention -- what Bey was wearing!

I loved the tribal print outfit and the braided topknot. Simple but cute!

Vacay in Fla

By Tenisha Mercer

Gotta live Florida's humidity. This was my hair at our hotel in Boca Raton. Did a flat twist with 3 Sisters of Nature Curly pudding (a review of my new fave product is coming soon).

Looked all cute and stuff. I was feeling my hur.

And then this happened when I went to the beach:
What the heck?  #ShrinkageIsAMug!

Long Hair, Don't Care?

By Tenisha Mercer

Cipriana long natural hair
Cipriana of Urban Bush Babes
Long Hair, Don't Care is a common saying in the natural hair community.

But I think many of us do care, especially when you consider how much time and energy it takes to successfully manage long hair. Sure, certain natural hair bloggers famously manage long manes of hair, like Cipriana or Sera, for example. And much respect to them.

But can I tell you that they have marathon washing and detangling sessions. I look at my own hair and realize how much more tangled it gets now as compared to 3-4 years ago, when I had nary a tangle.

Scandal Parody Video by Chescaleigh

By Tenisha Mercer

Source: YouTube
Everybody at home knows: Be quiet and don't mess with me when Scandal comes on ABC Thursday nights at 10 p.m. EST. I am down for Olivia Pope (played by actress Kerry Washington), and I love seeing positive images of a strong, powerful Black woman running thangs in Washington, D.C. This, despite the shade and negative stereotype-filled images of Black women in Hollywood throws our way.

I am a #ScandalFan. So count me as amused when I saw this Scandal-inspired YouTube parody by Chescaleigh. Hilarious! Chescaleigh captures Olivia perfectly, along with Harrison, played by actor Columbus Short, as they manage a makeup crisis in ScandalABC: A Scandalous Tutorial video.

Chescaleigh captured Oliva perfectly, down to her lip quivers, eye twitches and facial expressions.
